(1895-1973) Director cinematográfico estadounidense. Dirigió varias películas mudas entre las que destacan El caballo de hierro (1924) y Tres hombres malos (1926). Al cine sonoro pertenecen las películas: La patrulla perdida, El delator, La diligencia, Las uvas de la ira y ¡Qué verde era mi valle!, entre otras. Obtuvo cuatro premios Oscar al mejor director (1935, 1940, 1941 y 1952).

Dramaturgo británico. En un comienzo estudió derecho y escribió obras teatrales en conjunto con otros autores; sin embargo se sabe poco más sobre su vida, y la fecha en que fueron escritas muchas de sus obras es incierta. Sus tragedias vindicativas se caracterizan por la descripción de escenas de una austera belleza, el conocimiento de las pasiones humanas y una dicción poética de alto vuelo. Su reputación se debe principalmente a las cuatro obras de autoría exclusiva, de las cuales solamente una puede ser fechada con certeza: El corazón lacerado, La melancolía del amante (1628), Perkin Warbeck y su obra más conocida, Lástima que sea una ramera, donde aborda con elocuencia y de manera compasiva el incestuoso romance de dos amantes.

Director de cine estadounidense. En 1914 Ford se mudó a Hollywood para juntarse con su hermano que trabajaba en cine. Se convirtió en director de westerns y logró renombre con El caballo de hierro (1924). Su particular estilo combinó la acción con personajes vívidos y además reflejó su visión de la identidad estadounidense. Es reconocido por sus westerns como La Diligencia (1939), Pasión de los fuertes (1946), La legión invencible (1949) y El hombre que mató a Liberty Valance (1962), muchas de las cuales fueron protagonizadas por John Wayne. También dirigió dramas históricos como María estuardo (1936) y El joven Lincoln (1939). Recibió premios de la Academia por El delator (1935), Las uvas de la ira (1940), ¡Qué verde era mi valle! (1941), El hombre tranquilo (1952), y por los documentales The battle of Midway (1942) y December 7th (1943), que retratan la segunda guerra mundial.
